Short Films 2 Reviews of Denial and One Rat Short
|
"Denial"
Directed by Joel Kelly
Produced by Courtney Ford
Executive produced by Roberto Orci (Mission: Impossible: III)
Brandon Routh and girlfriend Courtney Ford star in this 2006 short film. Shot just weeks before
"Superman Returns," this film shows why they chose Routh for the role of "Superman." Routh’s
dramatic acting shows why he has received acclaim as an up-and-coming actor. I hope to see him more
in other films and can't wait to see him in "Superman Returns" in Las Vegas at Brenden Theatres (inside
the Palms Resort and Casino) in IMAX and 3D.
The story revolves around a couple’s relationship, which seems ideal until you realize that the man is
reliving his life through his memories.
I chatted with the filmmaker afterwards. This up-and-coming director has possibilities to become one of
the greats. He is young and has a good grasp of filming. How he put this story on film is great when you
consider it is his first film. The camera work is great, acting and overall film quality is fantastic.
The way Joel Kelly made the story looked on film is how he perceived it and that is what the audience
will see. Not just great acting and story (which the director also wrote), but the overall quality of what
an audience sees on the big screen. This was a favorite of most film festival attendees.
These young filmmakers put their heart and soul into these films for their own enjoyment and that of
the audience. They are not out to make money with their films. They do it for the love of filmmaking.
There are many talented filmmakers (directors/writers) out there just waiting for that big break and Joel
Kelly is one of them!
I wish that short films were available to all those who enjoy quality films. There are some great films out
there and I talked with Kelly about this. We talked about how to get quality short films out to the
general public. Like books that have short stories by various authors, why not a DVD with quality
shorts with good storylines on one disc. I think many would enjoy them. Maybe one of the cable
stations would put shorts between movies instead of tons of chatter about this celebrity or that, as
fillers these would be great.
Kelly just finished a script and hopes to make it a feature film. If it is anything like this short film, then I
for one will be first in line to see it!

"One Rat Short"
Director: Alex Weil
Writer: Alex Weil
Producer: Bryan Godwin
Executive Producer: Chris Byrnes
Editor: Jon Zawisha
Music: Sherman Foote
This is a cute animation short film with a theme of love between two rats (a street rat and a lab rat).
This makes for a cute, but then sad ending.
The street rat in search of a discarded food wrapper with a little food left in it, finds love in the most
unusual place a futuristic lab.
He follows the wrapper around the city of New York in this wonderfully computer animated film until it
falls into the lab. Then once in the lab he finds the other rat, and love. Then chaos breaks loose in the
lab. The ending I will leave as this might find its way to another film festival and I do not want to ruin
the ending.
I chatted with the filmmaker afterwards. Animated films take a lot of time and are expensive to make.
This was a very impressive presentation and some of the rats and other portions of the film looked like
live shots. This was a 3-4 year project in the making and it was well worth the wait. This filmmaker
would like to make a book with a DVD in it for distribution. I think this story is something that children
would also enjoy. It follows in the genre of the current tide of animated films. It would be nice to see it
tagged along with one a feature-animated film on a DVD.
