HIRSCH TO STAR IN WARNER BROS. PICTURES’ AND VILLAGE ROADSHOW
PICTURES’ SPEED RACER
LOS ANGELES — ShoWest has named Emile Hirsch ShoWest Male Star of Tomorrow, it was
announced today by Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event, which will be held
March 10-13, 2008, in Las Vegas. Hirsch will be presented with the ShoWest Male Star of
Tomorrow Award at ShoWest’s closing night ceremony on Thursday, March 13, at Bally’s and
Paris Las Vegas.
“ShoWest has a longstanding tradition of honoring break-out actors as Stars of Tomorrow, and
we are proud to honor Emile Hirsch in this category,” said Neuhauser. “Since making his big-
screen debut in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Hirsch has gone on to captivate audiences
and critics with his ability to immerse himself in a wide variety of characters. From his recent
award-winning performance in Into the Wild to his memorable roles in such films as Lords of
Dogtown and Alpha Dog, Hirsch has proven himself as a talent to be watched, and we are
thrilled to present him with the ShoWest Male Star of Tomorrow.”
This spring, Hirsch stars in the title role of Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow
Pictures’ live-action, high-octane family adventure Speed Racer, opening May 9, 2008. Born to
race cars, Speed Racer is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real
competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in
a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing
business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed’s thundering
Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not
only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam), but uncovers a terrible secret—
some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top
drivers to boost profits. If Speed won’t drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach
5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the
sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal
girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X
(Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother’s life: the death-defying, cross-
country rally known as The Crucible.
Hirsch can currently be seen in Sean Penn’s critically acclaimed drama Into the Wild, based on
the best-selling book by Jon Krakauer. For his work in Into the Wild, Hirsch won the National
Board of Review Award for Breakthrough Performance by an Actor and received the Rising
Star Award at this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival. He was also nominated for
two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Critics Choice Award and a Gotham Award for his portrayal
of idealistic college graduate Christopher McCandless. Hirsch will next start production on Gus
Van Sant’s biopic Milk, in which he stars with Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and James Franco.
In 2006, Hirsch starred in Nick Cassavetes’ Alpha Dog, which premiered to rave reviews at the
2006 Sundance Film Festival. Hirsch’s additional film credits include Lords of Dogtown,
Imaginary Heroes, The Girl Next Door, The Mudge Boy, The Emperor’s Club and The
Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys.
