ROBERT REDFORD TO BE HONORED WITH SPECIAL "SHOWEST VISIONARY AWARD"
|
Robert Redford will receive a special ShoWest Visionary award, it was announced today by
Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event that will be held March 10-13, 2008 in Las
Vegas. Redford will be presented with his award at the Opening Day Luncheon to be held on
Tuesday, March 11th at Bally’s Paris Las Vegas, by Paul Richardson CEO Sundance Cinemas.
The focus of this year’s luncheon is going to be on the importance of Specialty and Independent
films and distribution companies in today’s marketplace. Prior to the luncheon, one of this year’s
major success stories out of the Sundance Film Festival, Hamlet 2, to be released by Focus
Features, will screen for the ShoWest audience.
“A supporter of uncompromised creative expression and a proponent of bringing independent
and specialty fare to theatres and television audiences, Robert Redford, has in his own way
helped expose the movie going public to numerous unknown filmmakers and actors,” noted
Neuhauser. “Redford’s vision over two decades ago of introducing American audiences to some
of the most ground-breaking films can also be seen today with the success of such independent
films as Little Miss Sunshine, The Blair Witch Project and Napoleon Dynamite in today’s
marketplace. His drive to open movie-goers eyes to the world of independent film makes him
more than deserving of this award. We could not be more honored or thrilled to present Robert
Redford with the ShoWest Visionary award.
With the vision of nurturing new voices in film and creating dynamic ways of getting their work
out to larger audiences, Robert Redford formed the Sundance Institute in 1981. Dedicated year-
round to the development of artists of independent vision and to the exhibition of their new work,
the Institute has grown into an internationally recognized resource for thousands of independent
artists. The Institute’s artistic development program provides a range of concentrated creative
and financial support for directors, screenwriters, documentary filmmakers, composers,
playwrights and theatre artists. The original values of independence, creative risk-taking, and
discovery continue to define and guide the work of the Sundance Institute, both with US artists
and, increasingly, with artists from other regions of the world.
Formed in 1985, by Robert Redford, The Sundance Film Festival is the premier showcase for U.
S. and international independent film. Held each January in Utah, the Festival is a core program
of the Sundance Institute. Presenting dramatic and documentary feature-length films in nine
distinct categories and approximately 80 short films each year, the Sundance Film Festival has
introduced American audiences to some of the most innovative films of the past two decades.
Since 1985 the Festival program has evolved to include music, art, and dialogue. Over the years,
his Sundance Film Festival has been responsible for bringing numerous films to the public’s
awareness including; Reservoir Dogs, sex, lies and videotape, Hoop Dreams, Super Size Me,
Hustle and Flow, The Brothers McMullen, The Station Agent, Whale Rider, Little Miss
Sunshine, Once, and Clerks to name just a few.
Under the creative direction of Robert Redford, the Sundance Channel is the television
destination for independent-minded viewers seeking something different. Bold, uncompromising
and irreverent, Sundance Channel offers audiences a diverse and engaging selection of films,
documentaries, and original programs, all unedited and commercial free. Launched in 1996,
Sundance Channel is a venture of NBC Universal, Showtime Networks Inc and Robert Redford.
Sundance Channel operates independently of the non-profit Sundance Institute and the
Sundance Film Festival, but shares the overall Sundance mission of encouraging artistic freedom
of expression.
His newest venture in support of artists and audiences is the launch, in 2006, of Sundance
Cinemas. Sundance Cinemas allows patrons the opportunity to view independent, specialty,
documentary and world films in state-of-the-art cinemas on a daily basis. Sundance Cinemas
hosts a wide variety of film festivals, local filmmaker presentations, special event programming,
educational programs and other local events. Sundance Cinemas are currently located in
Madison, WI and San Francisco, CA with two others slated to open in Chicago and Denver.
