“It takes a very special actor to create a character as complex as Mateo. Djimon
Hounsou was a true joy to watch in In America and we could not be more excited
about honoring his performance with the ShoWest 2004 Supporting Actor of the Year
Award,” said Neuhauser.
Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor Djimon Hounsou in the film In America.
As Mateo, Hounsou plays a man dying of AIDS who is befriended by the two young
daughters of a family of Irish immigrants.
Hounsou first gained attention as an actor in Steven Spielberg's Amistad in 1997.
He was born in West Africa, then moved with his family to Paris, France, at the age
of 13. He was homeless after he left school. He spent a few of years wandering the
streets of Paris before being discovered by fashion designer Thierry Mugler.
Hounsou then moved to Los Angeles to try acting. He has appeared in music videos,
including those of Madonna and Steve Winwood. Then came Amistad, which
garnered him a Golden Globe nomination. Hounsou found steady acting jobs on both
the big and small screens, becoming a semi-regular on the hospital drama ER. He
appeared in Gladiator, The Four Feathers, Biker Boyz and Lara Croft: Tomb
Raider: The Cradle of Life.
