Halle Berry “ShoWest’s 2004 Female Star of the Year”
|
“Halle Berry is a classic. Her talent is only paralleled by her beauty and
she never fails to deliver one spectacular performance after another,”
said Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of ShoWest. “From the
excitement of the worldwide smash “X2: X-Men United” to the torment of
this past fall's sleeper sensation “Gothika,” the past year was
sensational for Halle Berry. We cannot wait to see her take over the
archetypal role of “Catwoman” and could not be more pleased about
honoring her work with the ShoWest 2004 Female Star of the Year
Award.”
Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Berry won a "Miss Teen
All-American Pageant," representing the state of Ohio in 1985. In 1986
she was first runner-up in the "Miss USA Pageant." Berry became a
model after the "Miss USA Pageant." Her first film role was a crack
addict in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever" in 1991. This role provided her
acting breakthrough for films. She had done some television work, but
now her career was starting to bloom. Berry then played opposite Eddie
Murphy's in "Boomerang" in 1992. She won critical praise for her role
as actress Dorothy Dandridge in the made-for-cable film "Introducing
Dorothy Dandridge" in 1999. She won an "Emmy" and "Golden Globe
Award" for her role in "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge."
Berry starred as "Storm" in Bryan Singer's successful adaptation of "The
X-Men." She won acclaim for her work as the first African-American
comic book heroine on the screen.
Berry took on a role in 2001 portraying a character that becomes
involved with a racist ex-cop (Billy Bob Thornton) in "Monster's Ball."
She earned critical praise again for her role and a "Golden Globe"
nomination. She was also nominated for an "Oscar" in the Best
Actress category. Berry won the "Oscar" and became the first African
American who had won this award in this category in Academy Award
history.
