Los Angeles, February 17, 2004 - Jude Law was named "ShoWest 2004 Male Star of the Year," it was
announced today by Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event. “Jude Law gave one of the best
performances of the year as Inman in Cold Mountain. He literally transformed before our eyes from a young
and happy man in love to a ghost of his former self, ravaged by war,” said Neuhauser.
Hey Jude or is it?
Jude Law was born in London in 1972. It has been reported that his parents named him after the Beatles' song
"Hey Jude." It has also been reported that David is his first name and Jude is his middle name. Well, we may
never know, but one thing for sure is whatever name he wishes to use he is one very talented actor.
Law worked at the National Youth Music Theatre from 1987-1990, where he played the lead in the musical
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At the age of 17 he worked on a very popular British
television soap opera Families.
Law's stage credits are very impressive too. He toured Italy as "Freddie" in a production of Pygmalion. His
stage work includes: The Fastest Clock in the Universe, The Snow Orchid, Live Like Pigs, and Death of a
Salesman. Law received a "Tony Award" nomination and a "Theatre World Award" for his performance in a
New York production of the National Theatre's Les Parents Terribles (which was re-titled Indiscretions for
Broadway). He was also nominated for the "Ian Charleston Award" as Best Young Classical Actor and an
"Olivier Award" for his performance as Euripedes' Ion in the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Law made his feature film debut in 1993 opposite Sadie Frost in Shopping. He then worked on I Love You, I
Love You Not starring Jeanne Moreau. He worked on Gattaca with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. (Gattaca,
was Law's American film debut). He has appeared in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Wilde, Music
From Another Room, eXistenZ, The Talented Mr. Ripley (which garnered a "Oscar" and "Golden Globe"
nominations for Best Supporting Actor, and he won a "BAFTA Award" for Best Supporting Actor for the same
movie). Other film credits include: The Wisdom of Crocodiles, Love Honor and Obey, Enemy at the Gates,
Steven Spielburg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (he was nominated for a “Golden Globe” for this movie), Road to
Perdition and Final Cut. He is also starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's hotly anticipated
The Aviator scheduled for release later this year. Law also is playing the title role in Sky Captain and the World
of Tomorrow, starring opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.
Law's latest movie Miramax’s Cold Mountain garnered Best Actor nominations for an “Oscar” and “Golden
Globe” for his role as “Inman” in the movie. Law also recently finished filming the lead role in the untitled Alfie
remake project for Paramount. Law is also in Mike Nichols’ Closer starring opposite Julia Roberts, Clive Owen,
and Natalie Portman. He will next star with Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep in The Adventures of Lemony
Snicket. The film roles just keep coming up for this versatile and talented actor.
